Microneedling is collagen induction therapy. A precise array of fine needles creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, and your body responds the way it responds to any small injury, by building new collagen and elastin. Over the weeks and months that follow, skin becomes smoother, firmer and more even. I use the DP4, the fourth-generation Dermapen, because it does this with a level of precision and control that older tools and dermarollers simply cannot match.
Microneedling is a series, not a single visit, and the results build gradually. At your consultation I will be honest with you about what it can do for your skin and how many sessions you are likely to need.

The Treatment
The DP4 inserts its needles straight down and lifts them straight out, in a fast vertical motion, hundreds of times a second. That matters more than it sounds. A dermaroller drags across the skin at an angle, tearing wider and more ragged channels and causing more surface trauma. The DP4 creates clean, uniform micro-channels with far less damage to the surface, which is why it heals faster and feels more controlled.
It also lets me adjust the depth precisely and change it as I move across your face, going shallower around the delicate eye area and deeper where I am working on a scar. The needle cartridges are single-use and sterile, so there is no cross-contamination, and the consistency does not depend on how fast my hand is moving. It is a genuinely more precise tool than the rollers and older pens that came before it.
TECHNOLOGY: vertical oscillating needles, single-use sterile 16-needle cartridges
DEPTH: precisely adjustable up to 3 mm, including a dedicated scar setting
VS A ROLLER: cleaner channels, less surface trauma, faster healing
I begin by cleansing your skin and applying a topical numbing cream so you are comfortable. Then I work across the treatment area in passes, adjusting the depth to suit each zone and your concern. A full session usually takes about thirty to forty-five minutes including numbing.
Because the micro-channels temporarily open a pathway into the skin, this is also an ideal moment to deliver active serums, and the DP4 system is built around serums designed for exactly this. This is where I want to be very clear about safety. Only serums specifically formulated and sterilised for microneedling should ever go into freshly needled skin. Everyday vitamin C, retinols and acids, however good they are in your routine at home, are not made to be driven into the skin and can cause real irritation or worse. I use only the purpose-made serums from the system, which is the safe and effective way to do this.
SESSION: about 30 to 45 minutes including numbing
SERUMS: only sterile serums formulated for microneedling, delivered through the channels
SAFETY: no home-care actives like vitamin C, retinol or acids during treatment
Microneedling has its strongest evidence for acne scarring, particularly the rolling and boxcar kind, and that is where I see some of the most rewarding results. It is also a genuinely good treatment for overall skin texture and tone, enlarged pores, and fine lines, and it can help with stretch marks and some surgical or traumatic scars.
One honest note. Microneedling is sometimes marketed for melasma and pigmentation, but the evidence there is mixed and it is not something I would offer as a standalone treatment for those concerns. If pigment is your main issue, we will talk about it properly at your consultation rather than assuming this is the answer.
STRONGEST FOR: acne scarring, skin texture and tone
ALSO HELPS: pores, fine lines, stretch marks, some scars
NOT IDEAL FOR: melasma or pigmentation as a standalone treatment
One of the real advantages of microneedling is that it is safe across all skin tones, because it does not use light or heat that can disturb pigment. That makes it a wonderful option for people who are not good candidates for certain lasers.
It is not right for everyone, though. I would not treat over active acne or any infection or cold sore in the area, and it is not suitable if you are prone to keloid scarring, recently finished a course of Accutane, or are pregnant. If you are looking to correct deep, severe scarring or significant laxity, a laser or radiofrequency treatment may be the stronger tool, and I will tell you so honestly rather than sell you a series that will not get you there.
SAFE FOR: all skin tones, Fitzpatrick I to VI
NOT SUITABLE: active acne or infection, keloid-prone skin, recent Accutane, pregnancy
FOR DEEP CONCERNS: a laser or RF treatment may suit you better
Microneedling is a series, not a single visit. Most people need a course of three to six sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart, with the higher end of that range for scarring, and then maintenance once or twice a year. The results build gradually as your skin remodels, so expect to see real change over the months following your course rather than overnight.
The downtime is genuinely manageable. Expect redness and warmth like a light sunburn for about a day or two, sometimes a little pinpoint bleeding at deeper passes, and mild tightness. For lighter work you will often look presentable within a couple of days. Deeper scar treatments come with a bit more redness and flaking. I will tell you exactly what to expect based on the depth we use.
COURSE: 3 to 6 sessions, about 4 to 6 weeks apart
MAINTENANCE: once or twice a year
DOWNTIME: sunburn-like redness for 1 to 2 days, gradual results over months
